Ralph Rawlinson's Railway Roundup

London Crossrail
A 260-metre long box under Eastbourne Terrace will form the major part of
work required in connection with construction and fit-out of the new
Paddington station.  A shallow cut and cover passageway in Praed Street
will link Crossrail to the District and Circle lines whilst a new
100-metre long tunnel will be required to access the Bakerloo line.

East London Line
After opening in 1871 the East London Railway had a variety of owners or
operators finally transferring to London Transport in 1948.  In May this
year, a large-scale conversion was completed which, coupled with the
reopening of most of the former North London Line into Broad Street has
allowed London Overground to introduce new services between Dalston
Junction and New Cross, Crystal Palace and West Croydon.  A second phase
of the conversion involves 1,422 yards of new railway between Silwood
Junction (formerly Deptford Road Jn) south of Surrey Quays station and Old
Kent Road Junction (a reinstated junction) north of Queen's Road Peckham
station on the existing South London line.  Once open the new route will
link Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction.  This new link will be laid over a
relatively short abandoned section of the formation closed in 1913/1964
and, until now, in use as a cyclepath.

Thames Valley Signalling & Control Centre
Stage 3: Transfer of control Cholsey and Goring
Signalling control of the 8 miles between Pangbourne and Moreton Cutting
was transferred from Reading SC to the new Thames Valley Signalling Centre
(TVSC) at Didcot in July.  There is no change in the plating of automatic
signals involved.

WCML
First TransPennine Express has confirmed that, following the successful
reintroduction of a direct service between Glasgow and Blackpool this
summer, the 'holidaymaker' train is to return in 2011.

Hertfordshire
Work has started on creating a transport interchange at Elstree &
Borehamwood.  The cost of redeveloping the station forecourt is being met
by the County Council, First Capital Connect and the DfT.

Birmingham Moor Street
Commencing with the December timetable change Chiltern Railways plan to
use the bay platforms at Moor Street for one Birmingham - London train per
hour (weekday off-peak and at weekends).  When all the current "Evergreen
3" upgrade is complete trains from Moor Street to Marylebone are planned
to take about 92 mins.

North Yorkshire
New Yorventure Visitor Centre opens at Pickering station, southern
terminus of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

NER Harrogate-Northallerton
Under Sustrans "Connect2" the Starbeck-Bilton cyclepath was to be extended
north along the Harrogate-Northallerton line to Ripley Jn and then west
along the Pateley Bridge branch to the site of Ripley Valley station.  On
14th December 2009, North Yorkshire County Council and Harrogate Council
agreed to complete a bridleway creation order and construct the route, but
there remained considerable concern about the level of possible
compensation payments to landowners.  A public inquiry, that will allow a
planning inspector to decide whether the cyclepath should be built, will
be held on Wednesday 16th February 2011 at 10.00am at The Council Chamber,
Crescent Gardens, Harrogate.

Glasgow-Edinburgh
Electrification teams are now working on Haymarket north tunnel as the
first stage of electrifying not only Glasgow-Edinburgh via Falkirk, but
also diversionary routes and lines to Dunblane and Alloa.  When completed
in 2017 there will be a total of 13 trains per hour over the four routes
between the two cities.

Bathgate
Edinburgh-Bathgate services started using Bathgate's new station on 18th
October 2010.

West Scotland Signalling Centre (WSSC)
As part of the Paisley Corridor Improvement (PCI) project, capacity is to
be increased by installing a third running line between Shields Jn and
Paisley.  The 48m contract awarded to Invensys Rail includes the
signalling work as well as the re-control of ten remote relay rooms in the
Ayrshire and Inverclyde areas.  Earlier this year Invensys commissioned
two new platforms at Glasgow Central, the second stage of the overall PCI
scheme and followed completion of the 3m Elderslie signalling project in
November 2009.  The two main PCI commissionings will take place in July
2011 for Shields interlocking and December 2011 for Paisley.

Kyle of Lochalsh signalbox
The Railway Herald reports that architects have been invited to submit
proposals and costings by 29th October for work associated with the
restoration of the redundant signalbox at Kyle of Lochalsh. The Inverness-
Kyle of Lochalsh and Inverness-Wick/Thurso lines are of course operated
under RETB (Railway Electronic Tokenless Block) arrangements, but last
year Transport Scotland was considering replacing the existing but ageing
RETB equipment by installing the ERTMS signalling system (still undergoing
trials on the Cambrian line).  2009 photo at:

Netherlands
Netherland Railways (NS) is to stop publishing a printed version of its
all-line timetable from next year (2011-12) and replace it with a digital
version.

Russia-France
The first of a weekly Moscow-Nice sleeper service (routed via Warsaw,
Breclav, Vienna, Innsbruck and Milan) left Moscow on 23rd September and
arrived in Nice 52hr 55min later on 26th September.  The return working,
departing every Sunday by the same route, takes three hours less but it is
hoped to reduce the overall journey time to 36 hours each way by December
2011.

Turkey
$45 billion US is needed for Turkey's target to construct 6,000 km of high
speed lines and 4,000 km of conventional railway until 2023.  Turkish
State Railways (TCDD) and Chinese companies will jointly construct high-
speed lines between Ankara-Izmir, Ankara-Sivas, Sivas-Erzincan, Erzincan-
Trabzon, Sivas-Malatya, Elaz-Diyarbakir, Eskiehir-Antalya and Konya-
Antalya.

Ivory Coast
According to Ivory Coast mines and energy minister Augustin Comoe,
construction is to begin in 2014 on a new 737km line linking the west of
the country with the port town of San Pedro to boost production from
nickel and iron mines in the region.
